Sorgu Island – a mystical hidden gem in Pärnu Bay

Sorgu Island is one of the most unique and least-known destinations in Pärnu Bay. This tiny 5–6-hectare uninhabited island offers rare tranquility, untouched wilderness, and a captivating maritime past. Accessible only by boat, sailboat, or kayak, Sorgu is the perfect escape for travelers seeking an adventurous sea trip, nature experience, or off-the-beaten-path discovery along the West-Estonian coast.

Untouched nature and extraordinary wildlife

The entire island is a protected nature reserve, home to abundant dewberry bushes, wild Estonian meadow flowers, and a rich variety of seabirds — including the iconic cormorant.
Cormorants are common along Estonia’s coastline, nesting on remote islands and islets where human disturbance is minimal. Their nesting activity dramatically shapes Sorgu’s landscape: their naturally corrosive droppings strip trees of leaves and bark, creating a mystical, almost otherworldly atmosphere.
Sorgu’s rocky shoreline, low shrubs, and panoramic sea views make it an ideal destination for:
  • nature enthusiasts
  • birdwatchers
  • photographers
  • travelers seeking the raw beauty of Estonia’s coastal wilderness
For many visitors, Sorgu offers one of the most authentic nature experiences in the region.

Historic lighthouse and centuries-old maritime heritage

One of Sorgu’s most striking attractions is its red-brick lighthouse, built in 1904 — a silent witness to centuries of seafaring heritage. Sorgu has appeared on nautical charts since the 16th century and has long served as an important landmark for ships entering and leaving Pärnu Bay.

With no regular ferry service, visits to Sorgu can be arranged exclusively through guided boat trips, sailing tours, or kayak adventures. This limited access adds to the island’s allure — on Sorgu, the journey is truly part of the experience.

Seasonal access and wildlife protection

As a protected bird habitat, Sorgu Island has a seasonal access restriction during the nesting period. Entry is prohibited from April 1 to July 15 to ensure a safe breeding season for seabirds such as cormorants.
